Advanced medicine made personal. WellcomeMD’s physicians are double-board certified, including in Anti-Aging and Regenerative Medicine, allowing them to use advanced labs and DNA testing to create a health plan catered to your specific needs.

A typical physician has 3,500 patients. A typical concierge physician has 600 patients. WellcomeMD physicians only have 300 patients... which means that we always have time for you.

What is functional medicine?

Functional medicine focuses on identifying the root causes of ongoing health problems and treating them with solutions that take into account the whole picture of a patient’s health.

The Institute for Functional Medicine explains functional medicine as “an individualized, patient-centered, science-based approach that empowers patients and practitioners to work together to address the underlying causes of disease and promote optimal wellness.” Essentially, functional medicine doesn’t just treat the symptoms—it uncovers why a patient has those symptoms and how the symptoms can be alleviated or even reversed with the right combination of personalized medicine and lifestyle changes.

For example, say a patient is struggling with weight management. Through functional medicine practices and genetic testing, their doctor will be able to determine if the patient has any inherent hormone imbalances or food allergies hindering their weight-loss results. The doctor will then be able to initiate a plan to solve the hormone imbalance and/or eating habits.

Traditional medicine is the backbone of functional medicine. However, by only treating the symptoms, patients end up spending more money for temporary relief that progresses into unsatisfactory long-term results.

WellcomeMD is a concierge medical practice located in Richmond, Va.’s West End that integrates cutting-edge ideas from functional medicine, precision medicine and anti-aging medicine with a traditional, evidence-driven approach. It’s something we call Advanced Medicine.

WellcomeMD’s advanced functional medicine approach not only determines how to treat its members’ symptoms, but also identifies the root cause of their issues and how they can be resolved through advanced labs, genetic testing and lifestyle evaluations.

Neal Carl, MD and Mary Colfer, MD are Richmond natives and are double-board certified, including by the American Board of Anti-Aging/Regenerative Medicine with expertise in hormone balancing.

Dr. Carl’s experience in both a general practice and a cardiology-focused multi-specialty clinic inspired him to explore functional medicine and understand the importance of advanced lab testing for effective disease prevention.

Dr. Colfer centers her practice around functional medicine and personalized treatment plans for her patients that focus on combining Western medicine with nutrition and alternative healing processes such as meditation.

WellcomeMD limits the number of patients for each doctor to 300, which allows members 24/7 access to their doctor with longer appointment times. This allows WellcomeMD doctors to apply functional medicine practices and thoroughly understand each individual.

While treating patients’ symptoms is part of the process, WellcomeMD doctors take a genuine interest in helping their patients get the results they need through genetic testing and lifestyle evaluations. They understand that each patient is different and that certain treatments can benefit one patient, but will not necessarily work for everyone.

Functional medicine is modern medicine that takes more comprehensive measures to look at one’s health and help them reach their health goals. WellcomeMD members are receiving multidimensional care and attention to the why and how of their symptoms through the winning combination of advanced functional medicine and a concierge style medical service that enables a stronger patient/practitioner relationship.
