Biography

The call to help others came from a childhood in South Korea, where Dr. Jennifer Chung attended an international school run by American missionaries.  There, her teachers instilled the importance of charity and humanitarianism.

So, after earning a bachelor’s and medical degree from the University of Virginia and completing a residency at Duke University as well as a geriatric fellowship at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, Dr. Chung followed that path.

A few years of practicing traditional medicine, she began to wonder if there was more she could do. She saw patients taking a long list of prescription medications, that were only treating the symptoms but not resolving the underlying causes.

“I didn’t want to just maintain my patient’s level of health or mask their symptoms, I wanted to help them restore their health and improve their quality of life,” Dr. Chung says.

After investigating alternative forms of medicine, she became convinced that specific lifestyle and dietary changes – working in coordination with medication – could truly restore people’s health, along with appropriate uses of more conventional treatments. Soon after, she enrolled in the courses offered by The Institute for Functional Medicine and is currently completing her training to become board certified in functional medicine.

What Dr. Chung loves about functional medicine is the emphasis on the individual. It is not a “one size fits all” approach. She also loves how the practice of functional medicine draws on the latest research in epigenetics, the study of how our environment changes the way our genes work. My philosophy is to look at the whole person - the interplay between their physical health conditions, their mental and emotional states, and their environment. If we could make positive changes in all these realms that affect our health, we can live a fuller and healthier life.”

But to focus on restoring health, Dr. Chung knew she needed to work in a practice that embraces a new model. The longer consultation time at WellcomeMD allows her to get to know her patients and effectively educate and counsel them.

“I want to partner with my patients on how to make healthy modifications within the context of their lifestyle and cultural beliefs,” she says. “When the physician and the patient are both fully engaged and committed, that is when healing starts.”

Dr. Chung is a wife and mother of three. She loves exercising and learning new languages and cultures. She speaks Korean and is fluent in Spanish, and loves working with people from all different backgrounds.
